Week 4

For week 4 I picked waiting for a train by good old Jimmie Rodgers. I love this song, the message is a little sad but the sound of the song is great. It kind of sounds like Johnny Cash wrote it. I also like that its just super simple, which makes it easy for other people to play. I noticed how it has a good beat for a song from back then. Nothing like you could dance to really good or anything but still a nice beat. Something else I like is about it is that its almost seems like a crooning song. Personally I think its going a little fast to be a croon, but the way he is singing and how its getting picked up by a microphone makes it a have that croon vibe. And on top of the kind of croon sound its has the country vibe too. This might be one of the first country songs. At least for me its one of the earliest ones I have ever heard of. Now it seems to be influenced by tin pan alley somewhat and the crooning style music you hear. And ive never actually heard of Jimmie Rodgers before this c...

Week 3

For this week, I choose  Rhapsody in Blue, by George Gershwin. Now when I first typed this in on youtube all I could find was a bunch of 15 minute videos of this, now this is a great song and all, but I didnt really want to listen to for 45 minutes straight, So I found a 5 minute version on google. This is an epic song, it kind of reminds me of the old tom and jerry shows, like this is probably something they would play in the back ground. My favorite part was probably the piano solo towards the end because, whoever that guy is, he is way good. Most of the time there really was not a lot going on, It was a lot of solo's and a few people playing most of the time, and not all of them at once, so that was pretty cool. I also noticed that there was a lot of different kinds of instruments, like the flute in the begining, the trumpets, and of course the piano. And most of the solo's / small groups, when they played, most of the time what ever they were playing was pretty complex. T...

Week 2

Well I chose  East St. Louis Toodle-Oo. And its quite the song. It starts out kind of with a jazz/blues type solo. And slowly some how turns into kind of a county sound, on top of the same beat as the Jazzy blues start. And it goes back and forth like this pretty much the entire time. It kind of sounds like it was made in the 1920's or 30's. I think its a cool song because back then most of the music was done by big bands and stuff. But this sounds like a only a couple instruments with maybe like 4 or 5 people, Kind of a more modern type band/ sound then what was big back then. This just might be me, but I think its kind of weird that theres no lyrics or anything. I dont know how popular it was to have lyrics back then, maybe thats what most songs had, maybe most didnt have any like this, I just dont know. But I like it cause it has a cool wierd sound that you pretty much wont hear any where else or during any other time. Over all its definetly a good song.
