Week 4
For week 4 I picked waiting for a train by good old Jimmie Rodgers. I love this song, the message is a little sad but the sound of the song is great. It kind of sounds like Johnny Cash wrote it. I also like that its just super simple, which makes it easy for other people to play. I noticed how it has a good beat for a song from back then. Nothing like you could dance to really good or anything but still a nice beat. Something else I like is about it is that its almost seems like a crooning song. Personally I think its going a little fast to be a croon, but the way he is singing and how its getting picked up by a microphone makes it a have that croon vibe. And on top of the kind of croon sound its has the country vibe too. This might be one of the first country songs. At least for me its one of the earliest ones I have ever heard of. Now it seems to be influenced by tin pan alley somewhat and the crooning style music you hear. And ive never actually heard of Jimmie Rodgers before this class, I dont know why, cause this is an awesome song, it seems like he should be as well know as Johnny Cash, same sound, same type of music.
I totally agree with the the Johnny Cash connection (maybe because I'm new to country). While I'm not sure about it being the first, or near the first, country song, I'm sure that it is incredibly early and ahead of its time. I recommend checking out Marty Robbins, especially "Billy the Kid" and "They're Hanging Me Tonight" if you like the somber singing stuff.
ReplyDeleteSince I haven't listened to this song yet. What in the song makes you feel sad? In my opinion I think it's really cool how you compared Waiting for a Train to an artist that you currently like in your life and I also like how you brought up that it's easy and simple to play for anyone who wants to learn it. That's also a good point that it could be one of the first country songs we've heard.
ReplyDeleteWell I dont know, it just has a sad ish vibe to it if you know what I mean, definetly not a pump up song
DeleteI totally agree with you about the sad vibe and the Johnny Cash comparison. I would have never thought of that comparison if you had not brought it up. This song definitely has a country vibe to it and I thought it was cool how you brought up the simplicity of the song and how others can play it easily.
