Week 2

Well I chose East St. Louis Toodle-Oo. And its quite the song. It starts out kind of with a jazz/blues type solo. And slowly some how turns into kind of a county sound, on top of the same beat as the Jazzy blues start. And it goes back and forth like this pretty much the entire time. It kind of sounds like it was made in the 1920's or 30's. I think its a cool song because back then most of the music was done by big bands and stuff. But this sounds like a only a couple instruments with maybe like 4 or 5 people, Kind of a more modern type band/ sound then what was big back then. This just might be me, but I think its kind of weird that theres no lyrics or anything. I dont know how popular it was to have lyrics back then, maybe thats what most songs had, maybe most didnt have any like this, I just dont know. But I like it cause it has a cool wierd sound that you pretty much wont hear any where else or during any other time. Over all its definetly a good song.

  1. I enjoyed this song as well! I noticed that the trumpet sounded like a duck haha! I looked it up and in this song, they used a plunger trumpet so that makes sense. I prefer lyrics too, but I think the style back then was just to have some music playing in the background, especially jazz music. It has a cheerful sound to it and I like how all the instruments take their turn on creating the melody. I noticed examples of syncopation throughout this whole song.

  2. The song does indeed start out with a jazz, blues type vibe to it, I agree. Kind of harsh sounding, I'll admit. Maybe it is one of the songs that was composed at the beginning of the jazz era of America. It does not really sound so modern to me. I definitely prefer the lyrics over the music and I do not entirely understand how they compliment each other in this tune.

  3. I agree that this song has a jazzy and blues style to it. It is very unique and therefore it is more interesting to listen to. I enjoyed the sounds of the trumpet the most throughout the song and it was very fun to listen to.

    1. I also prefer lyrics in any song, however I think the lack of lyrics really allow a listener to hear all the instruments and appreciate the music without being distracted by anything.

  4. This song actually falls right into the category I love in music when it comes to shifts in songs to different genres. I feel like mixing genres is the best thing to happen in music. I do prefer lyrics in songs but honestly I feel that it was way better to not have them due to the fact you could play this on a dinner date without it being overbearing and it also allows for anyone who is listening to appreciate not only the artist but the people playing the instruments.
